'The Peace of Paper'

Barbecue Thoughts

I watch her quietly and wonder what will become of her when I am gone, for soon I will be leaving the country. I would have wanted to go away with her but it was too complicated to get visas for both of us and she didn't even have a passport. Perhaps some day she will join me. But still I am quietly anxious. She senses my eyes on her face but she just smiles and kisses me on my right cheek and without a word she turns to join her friends in the kitchen. Her beautiful face lingers on my mind a little longer, raw natural beauty with little or no make up at all.

After she disappears into the house I turn my eyes to my friends who are still passionately debating the political chaos in our country. Sadly, each one of them will also be leaving soon. It seems that fate has decided to scatter us on the face of the globe. Australia, New Zealand, America, Asia, United Kingdom - anywhere but home! I look at them and wonder if we will ever see each other again but somehow a part of me doesn't really want to know the answer.
